11 Places That Are Actually Real But Don't Look So

These places may look like something out of a fantasy novel, but they are, in fact, very real.

Mount Roraima is the highest of the Pakaraima mountain chain in South America. The 31 square kilometer summit area of Mount Roraima is defined by 400 meter tall cliffs on all sides and includes the borders of Brazil, Venezuela, and Guyana. The tabletop mountains of the Pakaraima’s are considered some of the oldest geological formations on Earth, dating back to some two billion years ago.

The awe inspring Salar de Uyuni has been named by the Times UK as one of the Wonders of the World. The vastness and starkness of the area are inspiring many international visitors to make a daring trip to the cold and desolate treasure.
Often times during the rainy season the Salar is flooded with a couple centimeters of water - causing the entire desert to turn into a mirror.

The word's been out for some time now: the Czech Republic does not begin and end with Prague. A little further over to the east, for example, the region of Moravia stands out for having all the rural Czech hallmarks you could possibly hope for while at the same time still being within easy reach of the average traveller. The reality of Moravia is in stark contrast to its slightly grim industrial reputation (which is actually largely confined to Ostrava). And whether it’s picturesque villages, historical attractions, or its variety of dramatic landscapes to explore, there’s certainly more than enough on offer to lure you away from the charms of the capital…

Lisse is a town in the Dutch Bulb Region of South Holland. Most visitors come here in Spring, to admire the blooming flower fields in amusement park the Keukenhof. With over 800.000 visitors during the 2 months it's open every year, Keukenhof is one of the main tourist attractions in the Netherlands.

Iceland is a strange and beautiful country. ... about magical healing powers, the Blue Lagoon is an enchantingly beautiful place to relax in comfortably hot water. Not everything in Iceland is brown and gray — there’s a lot of green to be found, especially if you count the pale, pillowy moss that seems to cover half the country. I often say of places I’ve been that “it was like being on the moon,” but for nowhere has that been more true than Iceland.

Located near the Northern California town of Vallejo, north of San Francisco, the Mare Island Naval Shipyard (MINS) was founded by the U.S. Navy in 1854, with a mission to maintain, overhaul, and refuel ships.  This shipyard, the oldest on the West Coast, built more than 500 ships, large and small, including the USS California, the only battleship ever built on the West Coast of the United States.
During World War II, MINS built a destroyer ship in a record 17.5 days.  At that time, the shipyard employed about 45,000 people.  In the remaining years, until its closure in 1996, Mare Island employees also worked on nuclear-powered submarines.

In the Nama language, Namib means vast, quite an understatement when you're confronted with the endless orange dunes of the parched Namib desert.
The Namib is one of the oldest and largest deserts in the world and is protected by the Namib-Naukluft Park - a 50 000km2 wonderland of shifting sands and colourful dunes.

"It's absolutely silent: On a windless day, sometimes all you can hear is a deep, deafening silence." --Mal Wolfe, director of The Greatest Places

A geologist explores the caves of giant crystals inside the Naica Mine in Chihuahua, Mexico. Discovered by two miners looking for lead in 2001, these amazing crystal-lined caves could be mistaken for Superman's ethereal Arctic lair. These stunning white beams of gypsum have been growing for hundreds of thousands of years in caves below Naica in Mexico. Ten years after the amazing discovery, scientists are petitioning the Mexican government to claim for Unesco World Heritage status to protect the unique formations for future generations.
